Introduction

Facial expressions are part of what makes you look like yourself. Over time, repeated movements such as smiling, frowning, squinting, and raising the eyebrows can create lines that gradually become more noticeable, even when the face is at rest.

Botox® and other neuromodulators temporarily reduce the activity of selected facial muscles, softening dynamic wrinkles while preserving natural movement when treatment is carefully planned. Botox® Cosmetic is FDA approved for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe forehead lines, frown lines, crow's feet, and platysma bands in adults.

At Cabo Plastic Surgery, Dr. Roberto López Konschot approaches neuromodulator treatment as part of the overall balance of the face — not simply as a way to eliminate individual wrinkles. Every treatment begins with an assessment of facial anatomy, muscle activity, expression patterns, and aesthetic goals.

The objective is not a frozen or expressionless appearance. It is to use precise, individualized treatment to soften selected lines while maintaining the expressions and facial character that make you recognizable as yourself. Well-planned neuromodulator treatment should help you look refreshed — not treated.

Botox & Neuromodulators at a Glance

Neuromodulator treatment is not about eliminating facial movement. The goal is to determine which muscles should be treated, how much they should be relaxed, and which expressions should be preserved.

Our Philosophy: Natural Expression, Never a Frozen Look

Neuromodulator treatment should soften the signs of facial aging without erasing the expressions that make you look like yourself.

Dr. Roberto López Konschot takes a conservative, anatomy-based approach. Treatment is customized according to your facial structure, muscle strength, expression patterns, and aesthetic goals. The appropriate dose is used in selected muscles while preserving movement where it contributes to natural expression.

The goal is simple: for people to notice that you look refreshed — not that you have had Botox.

What Are Botox® & Neuromodulators?

Botox® and other neuromodulators temporarily reduce the activity of selected facial muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles — the lines created by repeated facial expressions. They are commonly used for forehead lines, frown lines, and crow's feet, as well as selected facial and neck concerns related to muscle activity.

Neuromodulators do not restore lost volume, significantly tighten loose skin, or correct structural concerns. When these are the primary issues, another treatment may be more appropriate.

How do neuromodulators work?

Neuromodulators temporarily reduce nerve signals to targeted muscles, decreasing their contraction. This softens expression-related lines while allowing treatment to be tailored to preserve natural facial movement. The effect gradually wears off as muscle activity returns.

What Can Botox® Treat?

Neuromodulators can address a variety of concerns caused by facial muscle activity. Treatment areas may include:

Dynamic wrinklesForehead lines; frown lines between the eyebrows ("11s"); crow's feet.
Facial refinementSubtle brow elevation; bunny lines; gummy smile; chin dimpling; downturned corners of the mouth; lip flip.
Facial contouringEnlarged masseter muscles; lower-face and jawline slimming.
Neck rejuvenationPlatysmal bands; selected jawline and neck concerns, including the Nefertiti lift.

Not every area is appropriate for every patient. Treatment is based on facial anatomy, muscle activity, and the effect each muscle has on overall facial balance.

Terms such as Baby Botox, Lip Flip, Botox Brow Lift, Jawline Botox, and Nefertiti Lift describe different applications of neuromodulators — not different products. The appropriate technique depends on your anatomy, muscle activity, and goals.

Baby Botox

Uses smaller, carefully placed doses to soften early expression lines while preserving natural movement.

Botox Brow Lift

Strategic treatment of muscles that pull the brows downward can create a subtle elevation and a more open appearance around the eyes.

Lip Flip

Relaxing selected fibers around the upper lip can allow the lip to turn slightly outward, creating subtle enhancement without adding volume.

Botox Nose Lift

In selected patients, treatment of muscles that pull the nasal tip downward during smiling can produce a subtle, temporary elevation. It does not replace rhinoplasty when structural changes are needed.

Jawline Slimming

Treatment of enlarged masseter muscles can gradually reduce their prominence, creating a softer, slimmer lower-face contour.

Nefertiti Lift

Strategic treatment of selected platysmal muscles can soften downward pull along the jawline and neck. It does not replace surgical lifting when significant skin laxity is present.

These names can help describe treatment goals, but the injection plan should always be based on the individual face — not on a trend or predetermined technique.

Is Botox® Right for Me?

Botox® and other neuromodulators may be appropriate if you want to soften expression-related lines or address selected concerns caused by facial muscle activity with minimal downtime.

You may be a good candidate if you

  • Are a generally healthy adult with realistic expectations.
  • Want improvement in dynamic wrinkles caused by facial expression.
  • Are looking for subtle facial, jawline, or neck refinement.
  • Prefer a treatment with minimal downtime.

Treatment may not be recommended if you

  • Have certain neuromuscular conditions.
  • Have an infection at the injection site.
  • Have a known allergy to the product.
  • Have other medical circumstances that increase risk.
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding — this should be discussed during consultation.

Age alone does not determine candidacy. Facial anatomy, muscle activity, expression patterns, and your individual goals are more important. Medications and previous neuromodulator treatments should also be discussed during consultation.

Consultation & Facial Assessment

Every treatment begins with an evaluation of your facial anatomy, muscle activity, expression patterns, and aesthetic goals.

Dr. Roberto López Konschot assesses how your facial muscles work together and determines which areas may benefit from treatment, which should remain untreated, and the appropriate degree of muscle relaxation. The result is an individualized injection plan designed to create balance while preserving natural expression.

The treatment experience

Neuromodulator treatment is performed in the office and typically takes 15–20 minutes. Using a fine needle, small amounts of product are precisely injected into selected muscles. We favor topical numbing for added comfort during treatment. Most patients can return to normal daily activities immediately afterward.

Aftercare & Recovery

Downtime is minimal. Mild redness, tenderness, or small bumps at the injection sites may occur and usually resolve quickly.

  • For the first several hours, avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas.
  • For the remainder of the day, avoid strenuous exercise.
  • Avoid excessive heat such as saunas or hot tubs for the rest of the day.
  • Avoid facial treatments or massages for the rest of the day.

Most patients can continue their usual daily activities immediately.

Results & How Long Botox® Lasts

2–4 days

  • Results generally begin to appear as the treated muscles respond.

Around 10 days

  • The full effect is apparent and results are typically evaluated.

3–4 months

  • Results last approximately this long for many facial treatments, although duration varies by treatment area, dose, muscle activity, and individual response.

After the effect wears off

  • Muscle activity gradually returns and treatment can be repeated if desired.

Neuromodulators as Part of a Broader Facial Rejuvenation Plan

Neuromodulators primarily address muscle-related facial aging. Other concerns may require different treatments. Depending on your needs, neuromodulators may be combined with:

  • Dermal fillers or Sculptra® for volume loss and facial support.
  • Sofwave™ for skin laxity.
  • IPL for pigmentation and redness.
  • ResurFX™ or other resurfacing treatments for skin texture and quality.

Some treatments may be better performed at a separate appointment or in a specific sequence, to avoid unnecessary manipulation of recently treated areas and allow the neuromodulator to settle appropriately. Your treatment plan will include the recommended timing for each procedure.

The goal is not to add more treatments, but to select and properly sequence those that address your specific concerns.

Risks & Considerations

Neuromodulator injections are generally well tolerated, but potential side effects include:

  • Temporary redness, swelling, or bruising.
  • Headache.
  • Asymmetry.
  • Unwanted muscle weakness.
  • Less commonly, eyelid or brow drooping.
  • Rare but serious complications are also possible.

Some aesthetic applications are off-label and are recommended based on anatomy, clinical judgment, and individual goals.

Because neuromodulators affect muscle and nerve activity, treatment should be performed by a qualified medical professional with a thorough understanding of facial anatomy, appropriate dosing, and injection technique.

Frequently Asked Questions

Results & appearance

Will Botox® make me look frozen?

It should not when treatment is appropriately planned. The goal is to soften selected muscle activity while preserving natural facial movement and expression.

How soon will I see results?

Improvement generally begins within 2–4 days, with results typically evaluated at approximately 10 days.

How long do neuromodulator results last?

For many facial treatments, results last approximately 3–4 months, although duration varies by treatment area, dose, muscle activity, and individual response.

What happens if I stop treatment?

The effects gradually wear off and normal muscle activity returns. Your appearance does not suddenly worsen because you discontinue treatment.

Treatment & safety

Is Botox® safe?

Botulinum toxin has been extensively studied and is generally well tolerated when appropriately administered. As with any medical treatment, side effects and complications are possible, which is why proper patient selection, dosing, and injection technique are important.

Can I have Botox® while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Cosmetic neuromodulator treatment is generally not recommended during pregnancy because safety has not been established. During breastfeeding, available safety information is limited, so treatment should be discussed with your physician and may be postponed until breastfeeding is completed.

What activities can I do the day of treatment?

Most normal daily activities can be resumed immediately. For the remainder of the day, avoid strenuous exercise, rubbing or massaging the treated areas, excessive heat such as saunas or hot tubs, and facial treatments or massages. Gentle walking, working, driving, and routine activities are generally fine.

At what age should I start Botox®?

There is no ideal age. Treatment should be based on your facial anatomy, muscle activity, expression lines, and goals rather than a specific age.

Treatment planning

Can Botox® replace a facelift or rhinoplasty?

No. Neuromodulators modify muscle activity but cannot reproduce the structural changes achieved with surgery.

How do I know how much Botox® I need?

The appropriate amount depends on your anatomy, muscle strength, treatment areas, and desired degree of relaxation. Treatment is individualized rather than based on a predetermined number of units.

Cost & Pricing

At Cabo Plastic Surgery, neuromodulator treatments are priced by treatment area rather than by individual unit, making the expected cost clear before treatment.

One area — up to 25 units$6,000 MXN
Two areas — up to 45 units$8,000 MXN
Three areas — up to 65 units$10,000 MXN
